Sound laboratory

Klanglabor

The sound laboratory is housed in the former turbine hall, today the museum’s hall for large events. The red cargo ship container contains a minimalistic digital recording studio allowing you to record your very own jingle. The three stations – “hear,” “mix” and “create” – are easy to use. Visitors can listen to a vast range of innumerable sounds, from bass solos and sung phrases to guitars and beats, and use the mixer to mix them, allowing for an uncountable number of song variations.

Visitors who want to refine a song using their very own compositions can use the “create” station to compose with voice, guitar, percussion and flute and then combine their mix with the sound samples.

Visitors can save their songs on a record cube; upon leaving the sound lab, the cube with the uploaded music is scanned, the visitor is issued a code and shortly afterwards the song is made available for download online.

The sound laboratory from Mannheim was granted its permanent home in the Rock ‘n Pop Museum following a road show through Germany. This creative cube, unveiled by the city of Mannheim on the occasion of its 400th anniversary, serves as an expression of the city’s musical roots. To date, the numerous prizes the cube has captured include two gold awards from the Art Directors Club (ADC).
